About Sisy & Yixin Choreography
Get one step closer to your dream in Artistic Swimming - we'd love to help!
Hello! We are Sisy & Yixin. Maybe you are here as you need a brand new routine in preparation for an important competition next year; maybe you just want something fun to swim to in your annual Christmas show. Regardless of your ability and needs, we'd love to help you choreograph the routine of your dreams.
Our own synchro journey started in 1998 when we became teammates at the age of 7, training under Coach Li Juan in Guangzhou, China. We bonded over mutual love of kittens and cheesy piano songs, but above all, we shared a great passion for synchro that would shine through for the rest of our lives to come.
Fast forward to nearly 25 years later, Sisy has swum in various major competitions representing China, coached at many clubs home and abroad, and nurtured numerous young swimmers in their artistic swimming careers. Yixin, on the other hand, has kept on competing at the Masters level, still enjoying the pure pleasure of being an athlete in her free time. After 15 years of separation, we both ended up calling the UK home. In 2018 a Mercedes commercial filming opportunity even reunited us in the water, having us swim together after all these years! And one day, we sat down and asked ourselves: what's the best way for us to add value to the synchro community?
For many years we realised that, with their focus predominantly on daily trainings and team routines, our coaches often find it difficult to spare extra energy choreographing solos, duets, or mixed duets. On the other hand, solos and duets not only help swimmers go above and beyond, but also truly bring out their personalities in the water. Knowing that choreography is what makes synchro special, we decided that this is the area we could help with the most.
Besides, we can finally tame this weird habit of simultaneously making up some synchro moves in our heads when a good song pops up on the radio :)
Look forward to seeing you dance to your dream routine!
Update: We have choreographed over 40 routines for swimmers all over the world since 2022, hooray!! :)
Sisy
Having retired as a professional synchronised swimmer in China, Sisy has channelled her passion for the sport through coaching, having successfully coached various national teams as well as competitive clubs in Asia and Europe. Today, she is a much respected international artistic swimming coach based in the UK. It is rewarding for her to see her swimmers grow and reach their fullest potential.
What do you enjoy the most about synchro choreography?
"I love the creativity and freedom the sport allows one to express. It's a process of producing art and I could turn an athlete into an actress/dancer, a pool into a theatre. For me, this is the most amazing part of the job."
What would you say your choreography style and process are?
"Usually, I start the process with understanding the personality of a swimmer, and I try to find a piece of music that matches the unique performance style and character of the swimmer. It's very important that the swimmer also learn about the background story behind the music so they can better interpret it through their facial expression and body language. "
Yixin
Yixin has always loved synchro and her secret goal is to compete at every age group category possible at Masters competitions, until the day she can no longer walk :) Her idol is Virginie Dedieu and her dream is to be able to move like her. Yixin earned a silver medal in 2017 World Masters Championships in mixed duet, and 6th in free solo. Today, she is training for the next Worlds in Japan and the Europeans in Rome, alongside with her lovely duet partner, Giulia.
What do you enjoy the most about synchro choreography?
"I love it when I get lost in the music and movements. The best feeling is to lose myself in the creative process and forget about the time and place - that's when my inner artist child is the happiest."
What would you say your choreography style and process are?
"I'd love to bring out the most authentic part of you through my choreography. I would first try to get to know you as a person and as a swimmer, and hopefully the routine would help you narrate your own story!"
I. Introduction
Firstly, we would love to get to know you, the swimmer! :) In order for us to tailor-make a bespoke choreography for you, it is important for us to familiarise with your personality, your strengths and weaknesses, your preferred artistic style, and to understand what you'd like to achieve.
For this, we would ask you to complete a quick questionnaire and maybe follow up with a quick call.
II. Music Selection & Editing
Any choreography process begins with the music selection. If you already have something in mind and wish to edit it yourself, amazing! If not, we can take over this task with no hassle for you.
Selecting the right music and the editing could be rather time consuming. Sometimes a routine music could consist of 3-4 or even more separate pieces and you'd want to make the music flow through as smoothly as possible!
III. Choreography
A personalised choreography walk-through / land drill will be recorded and sent to you. We understand there might be movements that you are not sure about from just watching the video, so there will be a 15-30 minutes complementary Zoom session for Q&A and further explanations.
Please bear in mind that some parts of the choreography would inevitably need to be altered when you try it out in the water.
IV. Additional Work Together
We also offer in-person training as an additional service, however this is subject to the availability of the pool and travel distance. This would be an opportunity for you to modify the routine as you try it out in the water, with us helping from the pool side.
Remember good choreography is only the conceptual design of a routine; 90% of time should be spent on perfecting it, such as working on your presentation, technical skills, as well as stamina.
